YEAR 0 · THE BEGINNING
The last ordinary day.
The lanes are clear, the shoulders are cut, and water has somewhere to go. From here on, this road is on its own.
One stretch of road. No more mowing, patching, or clearing the drains. What might happen next?
INDIANA, IMAGINEDDrag the line and watch the road change.
YEAR 0 · THE BEGINNING
The lanes are clear, the shoulders are cut, and water has somewhere to go. From here on, this road is on its own.
✳ These years are an imagined path, not a timetable. Climate, pavement, nearby plants, and chance all change what happens.
It starts at the edges. Grass grows tall; leaves and soil collect in the places we used to clear. Water finds openings in the pavement. Over time, plants find places to take root.
Researchers studying abandoned roads in British Columbia found that plant cover changed with time and differed between asphalt and gravel. This is one possible Indiana story, made to explore—not a forecast for every road.
